DAY 5: Workshop stirs creative power at Allman Town Primary
DAY 5: Creative workshop series at Allman Town Primary, January 13-22
It was all about being creative and learning about a few tools of the art trade on the fifth day of the creative workshop series, Thursday January 20.
The day started with a question and answer session with drama teacher Omaro Mazlyn, followed by a interactive reading of the Shaggy and the parrot book.
Then the last session for the day, the children were split into two. The fewer number were addressed by Bookophilia’s Andrea Demspter, while the larger group was involved in a hands on workshop by Melhanie Spence.
The workshop by Melhanie Spence, was overall the second favourite of the presenters, with the buzz of Farenheit, more than the other popular ones being the buzz on the lips.
Melhanie’s workshop taught the students about colours at the basic levels. After explaining about the primary colours red blue and yellow, and black and white, she then spoke of the secondary colours. Secondary colours result when any two of the primary colours are mixed.
After that the students well clad in “yardie” gear could not get their chance too soon to try their hand at painting. After Spence, taught the children about concepts, she led them into applying their own imagination into creating a painting, which they all agreed would be given to the Bank of Jamaica for their facilitating and encouraging all creative expressions. The Bank of Jamaica not only hosts lunch time concerts with performing artists, but often facilitates exhibitions of visual artists and launches by literary artists.
The subject of the painting by the students who enjoyed the presentation of God as te original creator by Hugh Hudson from the Jamaica guild of Artists, was of course creation and more specifically flowers, a childhood favourite element of nature.
The students discussed and assisted in bringing out the shared concept on the large canvas, soon to be painted in under the guidance of Melhanie Spence, and the watchful eyes of teachers.
It was the only day the students were held way beyond two hours, and they didn’t mind one bit, nowr did any of the parents who came and watched.
Meantime Andrea Dempster whose presentation largely depended on slides taught the children about careers in the publishing field. Although not a writer herself, her involvement as owner of Bookophilia has strategically taught her much about the varied aspects.
She was therefore able to the atetion of the children, and stir their enthusiasm further about writing and making books. Her presentation was a good compliment to the Shaggy and The Parrot book, an ideal stimulant and the writing workshop of Emma Lewis from the United States embassy in Jamaica(Public Affairs).
